So why is it so important to analyse my stud dog’s semen?
A semen analysis will give peace of mind to breeders that the stud dog is able to provide a successful mating. There are numerous factors that can degrade your stud’s semen, and we check for these factors in our analysis.
One factor is that Semen is divided into three parts. The first part of the ejaculate, called the pre-ejaculate fluid, ranges in volume from 0.1 to 1.0 ml. The second part is the sperm-rich part that actually impregnates the bitch, which is typically between 0.1 to 6 ml, depending on the size and breed of the dog. The third part is the prostatic fluid, which is typically between 1.0 to 20.0 ml. Its the second part that we check for colour and consistency.
What are we looking for when we analyse semen in K9 Fertility?
Analysis of a semen sample consists of colour, sperm motility, concentration, and the presence of other any bacteria.
Colour: Good quality, Healthy semen should be pearly white or translucent in colour. Yellow semen suggests it has been contaminated with urine and urine is toxic to sperm. Red colour in the sample indicates blood is present in the semen.
Sperm Motility: Since sperm have to be able to travel up the bitch’s reproductive tract toward her eggs, how well the sperm are moving and in what direction is important and sperm should be moving rapidly forward, not in circles.
Other cells or bacteria: The final thing to look for is cells and bacteria in the semen. Normally there are few cells seen in a sample but certain prostatic diseases can cause large numbers of cells to be present in a sample. A large amount of bacteria may indicate an infection, either in the testicles or the prostate.

Gone are the days of giving free or discounted matings for stud dog proving, now all we do is use Canine semen analysis and provide evidence in the form of a photo or video to show that your stud dog can do the job and is of good quality.
All we would do is collect a semen sample and analyse it under our microscope, you can view the outcome on the screen to record and photograph with your dog as evidence of a good quality semen sample. This is good for you as you can see straight away if your dog has a good enough sample to be used as a stud or if he isn’t quite ready. Some dogs perform great the first time with a sample of 3ml upwards and some are not so quick off the mark providing as little as 0.5ml the first time around. Considering in the 3 fractions of semen, a sample of 3ml or more is considered a good first amount. If your dog doesn’t produce a good enough sample on his first attempt it’s not the end of the world, there are supplements etc you can give him to dramatically improve this for his next attempt although we would recommend leaving it at least ten days after the first attempt before trying him again.
